Pregnancy Q&A

What is preconception care?

Coming in for a visit before conception gives you the opportunity to discuss your pregnancy plans with one of the skilled nurse practitioners at Embry Women’s Health. Your practitioner will take the time to discuss your medical history, your family’s medical history, as well as your current health. She’ll answer your questions and discuss the ways you can take care of yourself before, during, and after pregnancy. The visit will include a physical exam, and the nurse practitioner may also order screening lab work and genetic testing.

Your preconception care discussion should include:

  • A nutritious diet
  • Routine exercise to prepare your body for pregnancy
  • Optimal control over diabetes
  • Supplements
  • Herbal remedies
  • Medications you should avoid
  • Folic acid to reduce the risk of birth defects

What is prenatal care?

Prenatal care visits occur throughout pregnancy and are vital to the health and wellbeing of baby and mom. During these visits your provider will ask questions about how you’re feeling physically and emotionally as well as complete a limited physical exam. As your pregnancy progresses, the nurse practitioner will also monitor the fetal heart tones and measurements with every visit to ensure the baby is developing as expected. Prenatal care includes ultrasounds, routine lab work, and other diagnostic studies designed to provide information that may help prevent complications during pregnancy and birth. Embry Women’s Health offers access to highly advanced 3-D and 4-D ultrasound technology.

How often will I see the nurse practitioner during pregnancy?

It’s generally recommended you schedule your first prenatal visit as soon as you believe you’re pregnant. For the first several months, prenatal visits usually occur once a month. As you enter your 3rd trimester, health care providers generally recommend you come in for a check every 2 weeks, and then weekly during the last 3-4 weeks of pregnancy. If yours is a high risk pregnancy or you’re carrying more than one baby, the practitioner may want to see you more frequently during the 1st and 2nd trimesters. The nurse practitioners at Embry Women’s Health are highly trained and well-equipped to oversee routine and high-risk pregnancies.
